Despite being central to the conflict, Sadie Sink delivers a fairly ordinary performance, making Jean Grey less impactful than intended.

Jacob Batalon performs adequately as Ned, but the character is given little scope to make an emotional impact. While the second half handles him slightly better than the first, the emotional payoff remains underwhelming.

Story:

Greeks finally come out on top against Trojans in the Trojan War, thanks to the Odysseus’ (Matt Damon) masterplan of smart entry into the kingdom in a massive wooden horse. However, the actual war begins for Odysseus on his way back to Ithaca as his actions trigger the Gods making his voyage extremely challenging. Not only the journey but there is a bigger trouble that lies ahead for Odysseus back home. How he overcomes every hurdle and stands tall against them is what the movie is about.

Plus Points:

Telling an unknown or fictional story is less challenging than narrating one that people have heard all their lives. To make a film on one of the most familiar epics, The Odyssey, which is about a man’s homecoming after winning a war, no one could have done a better job than the man himself, Christopher Nolan. The Odyssey is one of the best cinematic experiences and is worth every buck.

The narrative is mesmerizing, to say the least. Nolan has peppered the screenplay with a stunning number of magical episodes that will leave us awestruck. One can only wonder how Nolan pulls off something like this every single time.

The way the difficulties encountered by Odysseus and his men on their way back home are portrayed is magnificent. There is a cave episode that plays out like a thrilling horror sequence and is sure to send chills down your spine. The sequence involving the witch, the wooden horse episode that brings Troy to its knees, and the block featuring the towering Laestrygonians battling Odysseus’ men are pure cinematic bliss.

Odysseus’ trick to destroy Troy, which leaves him in immense pain and guilt, Penelope’s (Anne Hathaway) resilience in braving the suitors without surrendering to them, and Eumaeus’ unwavering loyalty to his master serve as the emotional core of The Odyssey beyond all the jaw-dropping events.

Matt Damon is without an ounce of doubt the heartbeat of The Odyssey. He is stunning in the action sequences, while he moves us to tears in the emotional segments. The vulnerability is portrayed with utmost perfection and his act is award-worthy. Anne Hathaway plays her part with grace and subtlety. She is fantastic in many moments. Especially, her interactions with Tom Holland are very impressive.

Tom Holland puts up a sincere show, while Robert Pattinson is ferocious as the antagonist. Zendaya shines as Goddess Athena, while Himesh Patel, John Leguizamo, Charlize Theron, Samantha Morton, Benny Safdie, Jon Bernthal, and others delivered first-rate performances.

Minus Points:

There isn’t much to complain about here, as Nolan has crafted the film with utmost precision. However, the slow pacing at times may not work for a few, but the film’s subject genuinely demands that restraint for the emotions to take over amidst the fiery battles.

For those unfamiliar with the story, a few moments might be difficult to follow. Hence, it is advisable to know the characters beforehand to enjoy the film better.

Technical Aspects:

The Odyssey is superlative on the technical front. Ludwig Göransson’s score elevates the proceedings to a whole new level. In several moments, his work does wonders for the film. His brilliance perfectly complements Nolan’s vision.

Hoyte van Hoytema offers a visual feast with his cinematography. The stunning real locations, neat VFX, good editing, and amazing production values will keep us completely immersed.

Michael Jackson has been part of our lives at some point, with his god-gifted voice and dance skills, and hence the enthusiasm for this biopic is surreal. Hence, we look forward to the real-life concerts and popular tracks of the legend, and this aspect has been delivered superbly. The one sequence that gives immense satisfaction is the recreation of the iconic ‘Thriller’ track, and scenes like these will make us revisit Jackson’s concert videos after the film.

Michael Jackson had a troubled childhood due to his strict father, who even whipped him with a belt. Because of his father’s harsh verbal insults and physical abuse, Michael creates a dreamlike world called ‘Neverland’ as he attempts to recapture his lost childhood, and this aspect helps the audience connect emotionally with the legend.

The scene where Michael conveys to his father during a concert that he will live his life the way he wants is superbly presented. Jaafar Jackson makes a phenomenal debut with an award-worthy act. His performance is A-rate, as he perfectly portrays the mannerisms and body language of Michael Jackson. He makes us feel the aura of the legend, and the way he performs the dance moves is simply brilliant. In the emotional scenes, Jaafar is terrific.

Colman Domingo is superb as the antagonist and makes us despise him through his performance. KeiLyn Durrel Jones, Miles Teller, and others deliver satisfactory performances. Juliano Krue Valdi, who played the young Michael, was adorable.

Minus Points:

Anyone who walks in to watch a biopic would want to know the ins and outs of that celebrity, including the negative aspects, and this is where Michael falters. The film doesn’t showcase the allegations and controversies surrounding Michael Jackson’s life. Though a second part is likely, it still feels like watching a biopic that tells only half the story.

The pacing is initially a bit slow. There’s also an important aspect that lacks clarity. The film doesn’t show what the Jackson brothers were doing when Michael wasn’t around. Were they unhappy with their younger brother’s growth? Were their albums not performing well when Michael was on the rise? Even if we set aside the allegations, which may be explored in the second part, these aspects remain largely unaddressed.

Technical Aspects:

The usage of Michael Jackson’s iconic songs is the film’s biggest trump card. The production design by Barbara Ling and the costumes by Marci Rodgers recreate the bygone era flawlessly. Dion Beebe’s cinematography is stunning, with the concert sequences being a visual treat. The way the ‘Thriller’ track is captured feels magical. The film also moves at a faster pace in the second half.

Antoine Fuqua’s direction works well in parts, especially in the portions that celebrate the music icon. However, he should have addressed a few key elements, the absence of which slightly reduces the overall impact.

She plans to turn Quỳnh against Andy and eliminate the rest of the immortal group. Plus Points:

The film opens and closes with well-crafted action scenes that are fast, brutal, and enjoyable. If you’re here for action, you’ll be satisfied.

Charlize Theron once again brings her trademark intensity to the role. She is especially strong in the physical scenes.

KiKi Layne adds energy and presence, while Matthias Schoenaerts (Booker) gets a slightly more meaningful role this time and handles it well. The other actors do their part adequately.

Minus Points:

The story is the weakest part. After such a long wait, this sequel feels thin. It starts with promise but quickly slips into a predictable and routine structure. The ending is abrupt and clearly meant to set up a third film, which leaves this chapter feeling incomplete.

Uma Thurman’s casting raised expectations, but her role is surprisingly underwritten. Discord has potential as a major villain, but the film never explores her backstory or motivations properly. Her scenes with Theron feel flat, and the final confrontation lacks emotional or dramatic impact.

While some personal moments between Andy and Booker work, the middle section drags. The film often feels like it’s holding back, saving its bigger ideas for another installment instead of delivering a full story now.

Story:

In Beijing, Li Fong (Ben Wang) trains in traditional Kung Fu under Sifu Mr Han (Jackie Chan). Li tries to help by teaching Victor Kung Fu for a tournament, but his plan fails. Mr Han arrives, introducing a new Sifu to guide Li in Miyagi-style Kung Fu. Plus Points:

A few combat sequences, especially the climax showdown, stand out and offer something for fans expecting martial arts action. The pre-tournament training montage is also engaging and captures the spirit of traditional Kung Fu storytelling.

Jackie Chan’s presence, though brief, adds a sense of legacy to the film. While he understandably avoids major stunt work, his role still holds weight as a respected mentor.

Minus Points:

The film lacks emotional depth, which is essential in martial arts narratives. Stories like these need strong motivation driven by personal growth, inner discipline, and respect for tradition. Kung Fu is not just about physical combat but about mastering oneself and passing down values. Sadly, the film barely touches these elements.

Jackie Chan’s character could have been written with more depth to satisfy fans of the franchise. Ralph Macchio’s inclusion is also underwhelming, with his character barely making an impact.

The chemistry between the lead pair feels flat, and the character development throughout is weak. This makes it difficult to emotionally invest in the journey or care about the outcomes.

Technical Aspects:

Director Jonathan Entwistle struggles to deliver a compelling martial arts drama. Justin Brown’s cinematography is passable, capturing the action sequences clearly but without flair. Dominic Lewis’s background score is minimal and fails to uplift the emotional tone. Editing is crisp, which helps maintain a manageable runtime. The production values match the franchise’s standard. However, the Telugu dubbing is extremely poor and distracts from the viewing experience.

Verdict:

On the whole, Karate Kid: Legends does not live up to the legacy of its name. It misses the emotional core, philosophical depth, and narrative strength that made the earlier films memorable. Apart from a few decent action scenes and nostalgic appearances, there is little to hold on to. If you’re looking for meaningful martial arts storytelling, you’re better off revisiting the classics.
